What is Skin Cancer?
Affecting individuals of all skin types, skin cancer most often develops on skin exposed to harmful UV rays from the sun or tanning bed. There are several types of skin cancer found on various locations on the body.
Common skin cancers include melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Concerning changes to look for include a mole or lesion that is bleeding, crusting, itching, growing or changing colors.
Skin Cancer Treatment
The best way to prevent the growth of skin cancer is to perform routine skin exams. Dr. Kingsley recommends all her patients perform monthly, self skin exams at home to check for any new or changing skin growths. Annual skin exams by a dermatologist are also important. For patients with a history of skin cancer, it is recommended they see their dermatologist for full skin exams every three to six months.
If caught early, treatment for superficial skin cancers includes topical therapy or surgery. If the skin cancer is deeper, excision to remove the growth is recommended.
More serious skin cancers may need additional treatment and involvement of other specialists.
