Cysts are a sack of cells that form under the skin and start as clogged hair follicles. They grow as the inner skin layer continues to shed under the skin surface. The most common cysts are called epidermoid or sebaceous cysts, but there are many types, and they vary in appearance depending on their type and location.

Most cysts are noncancerous but can cause major discomfort and become infected. Dr. Kingsley removes cysts for her patients with an excision. It’s important to schedule an appointment if a cyst becomes painful or inflamed in order to receive appropriate treatment. The best time to excise a cyst is when it is not actively inflamed or infected.
